Ellison for Congress

EDITORIAL BOARD
PUBLISHED: 10/22/2008

Since 1963, the Minnesota Democrat Farmer-Labor party has occupied the congressional seat in Minnesota’s 5th district. This consistency is no doubt due, in part, to the demographics of the Minneapolis area and the progressive politics naturally generated by the University of Minnesota. Due to his effective representation of this liberal constituency, as well as the positions on which he has chosen to campaign, the editorial board has chosen to endorse Keith Ellison for Congress.

Afflicted by the same inertia that characterizes most freshmen congressmen, Mr. Ellison’s influence in legislation has been largely in his votes. Notably, Ellison threw his support behind the 2007 “100 Hour Plan.” In addition, Mr. Ellison supports comprehensive health care coverage, fair immigration reform, government-directed transition to alternative energy sources and a withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

Moreover, as one of the most visible members of the American Muslim community and its only elected representative at the national level, Ellison’s re-election enables him to advocate for a group that has minimal presence in government institutions beyond those stationed at Guantanamo Bay. Although religion alone is an inappropriate and frivolous reason to support any candidate, the peripheral benefit of improving national dialogue and governmental responsiveness by maintaining Muslim legislative representation should not be understated.

We wholeheartedly support Ellison’s re-election bid, and encourage citizens in the 5th district to cast their votes for him on Election Day.

Comments

The Minnesota Daily wants to host a forum for discussion regarding issues and stories regarding the University of Minnesota and surrounding communities. However, the online comments should not be used to threaten or defame. This is a place for people to be heard, and want to contribute to discussion. Those who persist to use expletives, inappropriate, racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post.

No buying it..........

Why should the 5th district, where I grew up by the way, embrace and welcome the muslim beliefs of Keith Ellison, when he himself does not accept other religions or Christianity?

Leaders, good leaders, have to be unbiased to race, religion and indifference. For this reason, Keith Ellison is no leader, but rather carries his district in deception.

Muslims In America

from CNN
Editor's note: Nafees A. Syed, a junior at Harvard University majoring in government, is an editorial editor at The Harvard Crimson as well as a senior editor and columnist for the Harvard-MIT journal on Islam and society, Ascent. She is chairwoman of the Harvard Institute of Politics Policy Group on Racial Profiling. She grew up in Atlanta, Georgia.

"Colin Powell's recent interview with Tom Brokaw has left me with some hope. He highlights the flaw in the question of Obama's religion with the answer, "he is not a Muslim; he's a Christian. ... But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America."

To prove his point, Gen. Powell recounted the story of Purple Heart- and Bronze Star-winning Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, an American soldier in Iraq who sacrificed his life for his country. He represents a Muslim-American community that is dedicated to its country and worthy of the presidential candidates' attention and respect.

It is a tribute to Gen. Powell's own dedication to his country that he would take note of the treatment of Muslim-Americans during the elections.

Thanks, Gen. Powell. You said the words that Muslim-Americans around the country were waiting to hear."

ED BOARD IS Quashing free speech!!!!!!!!

I have never seen a paper make an editorial endorsement of a candidate without mentioning all the horses in the race. The Daily ed board made a grievous error in judgment by not even acknowledging that Ellison has an opponent whose name will be on the 5th district ballot: Barb Davis White. Yes, the GOP-endorsed candidate will lose, but YOU THE DAILY ED BOARD, MOCK THE FIRST AMENDMENT by pretending she doesn't exist.
If you folks want to be professional journalists, just open up a paper like the Star Tribune and notice that in each of their endorsements, they analyze all official candidates in their editorial. You don't have to be objective in an editorial endorsement, but you do have to provide the truth. KEITH ELLISON IS RUNNING AGAINST BARB DAVIS WHITE. THE DAILY OBVIOUSLY EITHER DOES NOT KNOW THAT OR DOESNT WANT YOU TO KNOW.
