A bomb threat phoned in around 7 a.m. Tuesday was deemed false an hour and half later, but not before one building on the University of Minnesota’s West Bank campus was evacuated and another was locked down.
Classes in Anderson Hall were evacuated at around 8 a.m. and the Hubert H. Humphrey Center was in the process of being evacuated when the threat was deemed false, University police Deputy Chief Chuck Miner said.
A female University student phoned in the threat, stating that she overheard “three Somali males” discussing bombs in the two buildings.
University police Chief Greg Hestness said upon investigating the claim police found that the student who reported the threat was “being untruthful.”
Around 8:30 a.m., the student confessed to making up the threat after police challenged her on inconsistencies in her story, Miner said.
Students were then let back into the building and classes resumed.
Miner said it appeared that the student had classes in both Anderson Hall and the Humphrey Center on Tuesday and made up the story to get out of them.
About a dozen officers responded to the threat and a team of bomb-sniffing dogs was en route, Miner said. He said this was the first bomb threat of the academic year, to his knowledge.
Hestness said police didn’t weren’t sure about the threat’s credibility, "but we wanted to err on the side of caution."
The student has not been formally charged, but authorities are investigating charges of filing a false police report, a misdemeanor offense.
University spokesman Dan Wolter said that even if no criminal charges are filed, the student could still face discipline from the University.
He said the disciplinary process is managed by the Office for Student Conduct and Academic Integrity but it’s too early to know how this particular case will be handled.
The student’s choice to identify the men in her reported threat as Somali was troubling, Miner said. He said he questioned what prompted the student to include a racial descriptor.
Wolter called the situation “unfortunate” and said he hopes this does not lead to other issues in the campus community.
A TXT-U alert about the incident was not sent, but one was ready to go, said Terry Cook , director of Emergency Management at the University.
There were doubts about the credibility of the claim, Cook said, and while the alert was being prepared, police confirmed the threat was false.

Remember kids
Saying 'bomb' isn't only banned on airplanes, you better also watch your ass in the bathrooms, hallways and in class.
Oops I did it again
Could it be McCain loving white girl from small town who decides to use her racism muscle and claim Somalis did it? http://www.startribune.com/local/34272779.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP...
Or is it too-ditzy to think?
The threat was to Anderson
The threat was to Anderson Hall. I doubt anyone with class there is a McCain lover.
RE: The threat was to Anderson
Hilarious! I agree.
Community service
I hope that this little brat gets to serve time in jail, or at least some community service...hopefully helping out the Somali community in some way.
I also can't wait til they release her name so we can all use it as an adjective to describe opportunistic idiots. "Wow, you're a real [insert girls' name here]."
Unbelievable.
dumb outstate yuppy
this is EXACTLY the kind of thing minneapolis doesn't need, privileged rural white migrants manipulating the cops to cheat a system that already favors them. i commend the police and officer miner for their handling of the situation, and seeing through the smoke.
this migrant better pay the full consequences for imposing her bigotry on the city.
No mention of her race in the
No mention of her race in the article. So based purely on the facts we have, there is more evidence to believe that you are a racist than that she is.
In the StarTribune article it
In the StarTribune article it states that she is a "white" 19-yr old
opps
Ha ha! You didn't check your facts! Don't you feel stupid. But here's a little Media Studies 101: Most media will specify what race an alleged perp except when the perp. is white. I dare you to do a content analysis and watch several news stations tonight to verify this.
Oh, please
So if the fake threat would have come from a black immigrant Obama-voting urbanite then it would have been less obnoxious?
There is nothing as racist and intolerant as a college-know-it-all hippy. String this little punk up by her thumbs, but spare me the Extra Special Outrage because of the Mass Victimization of the Somali immigrants.
Agree with the last post
This person was incredibly irresponsible in calling in the bomb threat. However it doesn't surprise me that she would target the Somali community with her lie. It kind of makes sense considering the attacks by that community around the campus in the past couple of years.
Except that is what is even
Except that is what is even more troubling about her claim that they were Somali. Their community has been in all sorts of bad news lately, and making up a lie about something so serious then blaming it on any certain group is wrong.
Is it just me, or is a bad grade on a test or skipping a class way better than facing criminal charges and academic punishment?
There may not be a lot of
There may not be a lot of McCain types in Anderson, but there are a lot of stupid people there and everywhere on-campus.
Campus Crime Stats
Makes you wonder if all the racial descriptors in the campus crime alerts of the past are actually true or not. It wouldn't surprise me at all if there were many other instances where privileged rural white migrants blamed a crime on a "East African male". You can take the statistics in regards to race from the campus crime alerts worth a grain of salt.
What's interesting is that,
What's interesting is that, here, the actual criminal is the white girl. Yet, we do not get any time of racial descriptor from the UMN/MNDaily. The only way we find out it's a white girl is by reading the StarTribune.
In crime articles of the past, especially ones where the suspect is Somalian, we get a racial descriptor. Here's a recent example:
http://www.mndaily.com/2008/11/01/university-custodian-fights-robbers
"They were both described as 16- to 17-year-old East African males, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall with thin builds. One was wearing a black baseball cap, black jacket and blue jeans, while the other had a white, pull-over style sweater and blue jeans."
WHY DOES THE MNDAILY FAIL TO MENTION THE RACIAL DESCRIPTORS OF THE TRUE CRIMINAL IN THIS CASE???
Usually a media outlet will
Usually a media outlet will not include the race unless it is pertinent to the story or if it is anything other than white. It may sound strange and be appalling to an extent, but unless the race is mentioned it is usually assumed the person is white.
Re: What's interesting is that,
I'm guessing the reason they did not include ANY descriptors (racial or otherwise) of the girl in this case was because the police did not see her as a threat to anyone. If you hold someone up at gunpoint, then you are a threat. If you tell a lie of the kind that she did, you are guilty of criminal use of police resources, but not of posing an imminent threat to anyone.
Police reports do include
Police reports do include racial descriptors. I feel you're making assumptions about a process you know very little about.
Again, racial descriptors
Again, racial descriptors would only be included if policy are trying to find a suspect for example. They already have someone in custody, and it's not very pertinent to the story.
You could just not go to
You could just not go to class.
no kidding
I just don't understand. Worst case scenario for her is that she misses class so she has an extra day to work on that assignment or study for a test and maybe she fails that assignment or class. Since when does that compare with missing a class to face police/university prosecution and still probably failing that assignment or class? Just don't go. Either way it's your fault.
What a ding dong.
Yeah - a smart person would
Yeah - a smart person would just skip class.
YYYEEAH CONOR!!!
YYYEEAH CONOR!!!
Maybe her rural upbringing
Maybe her rural upbringing made her feel too guilty about skipping class.
Rural Upbringing
If her rural setting propelled her to embrace bigotry in the name of getting out of class, I'm pretty sure that she wouldn't have problem skipping class in the first place. Bottom line: She went for what SHE thought was the most believable story, which reveals her personal views regarding Somali people. She should have thought this one out a little bit more.
No test
This was a pretty immature thing to do, but I gotta say it felt great to show up and find that the test I had in Anderson had been cancelled. So lucky.
Some post a few back
You've got it wrong on the racial descriptors concerning white people. They almost always mention the race if the person is white but if they aren't it's a given that you won't hear about it. The U has to mention the race though because these people are still likely running around the U planning to attack another person.
Personally I don't think there is any problem giving a racial descriptor. Knowing that this girl is white is a fact in the case, we shouldn't be afraid of knowledge. People deserve to know the facts about who are committing the violent crimes in their neighborhoods.
