Culture compass: Droids, “Pockiez” and “Adventure Time”

Friday: Star Wars on a hill

A picnic blanket, you will need for this movie night. Hyland Hills continues their “Movies on the Hill” series this Friday with “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” No need to race around for snacks or lawn games — Hyland has you covered with a classic selection of each. Fitting for the show, this will be their last outdoor movie event of the year. May the force be with you and enjoy the show!

Where: Hyland Hills, 8800 Chalet Rd., Bloomington

When: 5 p.m., movie starts at dusk

Cost: Free

Saturday: Prairie Burn Music Festival

It’s the time of year when outdoor music is coming to an end. Head on over to this outdoors expo on the St. Croix to get one of your last fixes — and let out all of your granola needs. Brother Ali will close the night out, with Now, Now, PaviElle and more coming before him. Hosted by the YMCA and REI, rock climbing walls, hayrides and archery will be going on all day as well. Get outside and explore!

Where: YMCA Camp St. Croix, 532 County Rd. F, Hudson, Wisconsin

When: 12 p.m.

Cost: $35

Sunday: The Frights at 7th Street Entry

Nothing gets you ready for the week like some good California punk music. Last here two years ago, this semi-elusive band will be headlining the show in the classic Minneapolis venue. Grinding rifts and shredding vocals will get you stoked for the week ahead as the band shows off their new project, “Hypochondriac.” Finish your homework and get ready to mosh.

Where: 7th Street Entry, 701 1st Ave. N., Minneapolis

When: 7 p.m.

Cost: $17 advance, $20 door, 18+

CULTURE TO CONSUME

Listen to this: “In Fina We Trust”

Like Odd Future’s classier missing link, NYC-born-and-raised rapper Awkwafina goes off on this album. Released in June, this album has not received the recognition it deserves. Coming from her comedic acting roots, ‘Fina masterfully spits with one-of-a-kind voice — and comedy. With tracks like “Pockiez” and “Ghost”, you can laugh while you trap out with this fall banger. Her name sound familiar? Awkwafina also stars in the new hit “Crazy Rich Asians,” which isn’t a bad flick to hit up, either.

Watch This: “Adventure Time Series Finale”

Alas, the sad day has come upon us. The heroic duo that took you on perilous journeys in-between your eighth grade homework has retired. Jake the Dog and Finn the Human hang up their swords once and for all as Ooo’s fate is determined in “Come Along with Me” — the series finale. Aired last Monday, it’s a must peep (or a re-peep) for all adventurers out there.

Be this: Open minded

It’s a new year in a crazy age. Getting excited about new experiences that may come from the wackiest of situations usually turns into a good time — or a good story, at least. There’s no need to be negative about classes or that person that seems kind of weird who sits next to you. Try some crazy food, listen to a new band, explore a new area. Keep life exciting!
