Hargrow leaves men’s basketball team

Moe Hargrow, a guard on Minnesota’s men’s basketball team, announced Friday he has left the Gophers and will transfer.

“Moe is talented,” Gophers coach Dan Monson said. “We are going to miss him.”

The junior was averaging 11.4 points and 4.4 rebounds this year, but it has been a turbulent season for the St. Paul native.

Hargrow injured his wrist during the summer which resulted in a slow start to his season.

Recently, Hargrow has struggled shooting the ball and moved from the starting lineup to the bench.

For example, he only played 18 minutes against Ohio State on Jan. 17 and saw sparse action in the second half.

Against Purdue on Wednesday, Hargrow scored nine points on three-for-nine shooting.

“(Thursday) night his mom called me and asked for his release,” Monson said. “I said OK. We had had other talks about it.”

Monson believes Hargrow will transfer to another Division I school.

Hargrow’s departure marks the fourth consecutive year a player has left under Monson during the season. Kris Collins, Shane Schilling, Joel Przybilla and Mitch Ohnstad have all left during the season under Monson.

Including Wes Washington not joining the Gophers for the second semester, Minnesota will now have two scholarships available for next season.

The Gophers (8-8, 0-4 Big Ten) face Indiana on Saturday afternoon at Williams Arena.
