U hitter selected to world v-ball team

Minnesota volleyball player Nicole Branagh has been selected as one of 18 athletes on the USA World University Games roster. The World University Games will be held from July 2 through July 10 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
Branagh, a junior outside hitter for the Gophers, earned all-region and All-Big Ten honors a year ago after landing 579 kills. Her 5.51 kills-per-game average ranked second in the conference and fifth nationally. After just two seasons with Minnesota, Branagh owns 1,057 career kills.
Branagh is one of five Big Ten players — along with Jenna Wrobel and Christine Landry of Michigan State and Dana Stearns and Jen Flynn of Ohio State — on the roster, which will be coached by Buckeyes coach Jim Stone.
ù Charnett Fair, a transfer from Golden West College who will join the Gophers this fall, is also training for international competition this summer. Fair, a junior middle blocker, is a member of the U.S. Pan-American team. The team will play for the second annual Colorado Cup July 26 through Aug. 1.
Chicoine eliminated
Minnesota men’s tennis player Tom Chicoine was eliminated Wednesday from the NCAA tennis singles championships in Athens, Ga. Chicoine dropped his match 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 to Stanford’s Ryan Wolters.
Chicoine was unseeded heading into the NCAA tournament, while Wolters was seeded ninth. He finished the season with a 32-17 overall record, and went 114-65 in his career to become the winningest player in Gophers history.
Track athletes all-academic
Minnesota junior track athletes Glenn Lindqvist and Staffan Strand were both named to the Academic All-District V Team. Both athletes are members of the Gophers Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field championship team, which won the title last weekend.
Strand has a 3.79 grade-point average in computer science. Last weekend, he won his sixth Big Ten high jump title at seven feet, four and one-half inches. He is a three time All-American and finished fifth at the 1999 World Indoor Championships with a jump of 7 feet, 4 1/4 inches.
Lindqvist carries a 3.82 GPA in finance. He is ranked fifth in the nation in the decathlon. Last weekend he placed sixth in the javelin at the Big Ten championships.
