Gophers kick off the season against UNLV
Published August 29, 2013
The Gophers kick of their 2013 season in about 15 minutes at TCF Bank Stadium. It's the team's first home-opener since 2008 and head coach Jerry Kill's first with the Gophers. Kill has appeared optimistic so far this preseason that the team will improve, though he hasn't predicted how many more games the team will win.
The team finished 6-7 last season, including a 2-6 Big Ten record. Their opponent tonight, Nevada-Las Vegas, went just 2-11 last season and is 4-21 over the past two years.
The Rebels return sophomore quarterback Nick Sherry, who started 11 of the team's 12 games last season. He threw for 2,544 yards and 16 touchdowns but also threw 17 interceptions.
The Gophers start sophomore Philip Nelson at quarterback. He started the final seven games of 2012 and passed for 873 yards and eight touchdowns.
Big Ten Network will televise the game. Catch live updates from our Twitter account, @DailyattheBank.
