Sonnenberg, Hegerle, Horton earn Big Ten Athlete of the Week

Sam Sonnenberg, John Horton and Micah Hegerle have all earned Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors following strong weekend performances.

After setting the new school record in the weight throw (and landing the second-best throw in the country this year), Hegerle’s selection comes as no surprise.

For Sonnenberg, it is her second consecutive award for her work in the pole vault. She paced the women’s team, who rested a bulk of competitors this weekend in preparation for the Big Ten Indoor championships. Her Parent’s Day Open vault of 13 feet, 11 1/4 inches is currently the top mark in the Big Ten this season.

Todhunter pulled in the first such weekly honor of his career. His 8.00 second mark in the 60-meter hurdles is a new career-best and is the third-best in Gophers history. It’s the seventh-fastest time clocked in the Big Ten in this year.
