Carter picks up second All-America distinction

Gophers senior defensive back Tyrone Carter was named Tuesday to the Football News Preseason All-American Team. Carter, who was earlier announced as a preseason All-American by Playboy magazine, is one of seven Big Ten offensive and defensive players who made the team. He is joined on the first team by Purdue quarterback Drew Brees, Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne, Ohio State guard Rob Murphy, Michigan tackle Steve Hutchinson, Penn State linebacker LaVar Arrington, Ohio State linebacker Na’ll Diggs and Wisconsin defensive back Jamar Fletcher.
Carter broke school records last year for career solo tackles (298) and solo tackles in a season (127). He is listed in the latest Gophers football prospectus as a candidate for Bronko Nagurski and Jim Thorpe awards for the nation’s top defender.

ù Keith Jackson unexpectedly ended his six-month retirement Tuesday, deciding to return to ABC’s college football telecasts this season.
