Ralph Sampson Jr., father of Ralph Sampson III, inducted into Naismith Hall of Fame

Ralph Sampson Jr., father of Gophers men’s basketball player Ralph Sampson III, was chosen as one of 12 members to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2012.

The inductees will be honored September 6-8, 2012, and include five-time NBA All-Star Reggie Miller, the NBA’s all-time winningest coach Don Nelson, and Sampson Jr.

Sampson Jr. played for the University of Virginia, where he became the third three-time National College Player of the Year and led the Cavaliers to an NIT Championship and one Final Four appearance.

Drafted with the No. 1 pick in the 1983 NBA draft to the Houston Rockets, Sampson Jr. was only the sixth player at the time in NCAA history to collect 2,000 points and 1,500 rebounds.

A three-time NBA All-Star, Sampson Jr. was named Rookie of the Year in 1984 and was the MVP of the 1985 All-Star game.
