Minnesota takes fifth place at Windy City Invite

Minnesota’s men’s gymnastics team placed fifth at Saturday’s Windy City Invitational in Chicago, the team’s first event of the season.

The eighth-ranked Gophers scored 203.900 team points. Invite champion Ohio State tallied 211.650 team points. The Big Ten swept the top five in Chicago, with Illinois taking second, Michigan placing third and Iowa finishing fourth.

Minnesota was led by junior Jake Lee, who finished third in the all-around with a score of 52.900. Lee also placed third in the parallel bars with a 9.15 and fourth in the pommel horse with a score of 8.80.

The Gophers compete Saturday at Illinois in Champaign, Ill.

Women top Denver

Minnesota’s women’s gymnastics team defeated No. 21 Denver on Saturday at the Sports Pavilion by a score of 192.900-192.350.

The 24th-ranked Gophers were led in their season-opening meet by senior Laura Johnson, who finished second in the all-around with a score of 38.475. Denver’s Heather Huffaker won the all-around, scoring 38.900.

Minnesota’s next meet is Saturday at Illinois-Chicago.
