Minnesota remains at No. 14 in AVCA poll

The Gophers volleyball team stayed put at No. 14 in Monday’s American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, despite two road wins this past weekend against quality teams.

Minnesota (10-5 overall, 3-3 Big Ten) rallied from two sets down to defeat No. 18 Michigan on the road Friday, and then swept unranked Michigan State the following night in three close sets. The Gophers, who have been ranked in the top-25 for 56 consecutive weeks, had not defeated the two Michigan teams on the road in the same year since 2005.

The Wolverines fell only two spots to No. 20 despite losing to Minnesota and unranked Wisconsin at home.

Meanwhile, after losing a thrilling five-set match to top-ranked Illinois, four-time defending champion Penn State dropped one spot to No. 9. The Nittany Lions (11-5) and the Gophers are the only two teams in the top-15 with five or more losses.

The other ranked Big Ten schools: Nebraska (5th), Purdue (11th) and Ohio State (24th). The Gophers welcome Nebraska to Williams Arena on Oct. 15 after hosting Iowa at the Sports Pavilion on Oct. 14.
