Three Gophers named to all-academic team

Three Gophers athletes were named Monday to the GTE Academic All-District V team, an honor given for excellence in both academics and athletics.
Soccer player Jennifer McElmury and men’s swimmers Martin Zielinski and John Cahoy now advance to the national ballot, where they will be considered for Academic All-American honors.
To qualify for district honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve and carry a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2. Region V is made up of schools in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba.
McElmury, a senior midfielder from White Bear Lake, Minn., has a 3.31 GPA in kinesiology.
Zielinski, a butterfly specialist from Bloomington, has a 3.63 GPA in biology/pre-medicine.
Cahoy, a sprint freestyler from Hudson, Wis., earned his eighth consecutive 4.0 GPA last quarter while majoring in chemistry.
