Track, gymnastics deserve coverage too

Megan Smith - University student

In recent years I have not been impressed with all of the Minnesota DailyâÄôs sports coverage, with several articles twisted in a negative way. This year, however, I have been impressed with the sports coverage and wanted to say thank you for the inclusive coverage of all sports this year and focusing on the successes of teams rather than headlining the losing football team every week.
As a cross country and track fan, I have been very impressed with Derek WetmoreâÄôs thorough coverage of the cross country teams this fall.
However, I was somewhat disappointed with the DailyâÄôs coverage when I excitedly opened up the winter sports preview to read up on my favorite teams only to find that not all winter sports were included, with my two favorites âÄî indoor track and field and gymnastics âÄî being left out.
The menâÄôs track team has been the reigning Big Ten champion for the past two years and the womenâÄôs track team just ended a three-year Big Ten Indoor winning streak last year. Track and field is one of the largest participatory high school sports. Gymnastics has several national competitors.
I do not see why these sports would be left out of the winter sports preview. If you are going to do a winter sports preview, you should preview all winter sports, not just a select few.
Thank you for your good sports coverage this year âÄî up to the winter sports preview âÄî and I hope the good coverage will continue the rest of the year.
