Minnesota’s wrestling team, defending NCAA champions, captured eight titles last weekend at the Bison Open in Fargo, ND.
Senior Leroy Vega won his fifth-straight title at 125 pounds. Other champions were Ryan Lewis (133), Chad Erikson (141), Luke Becker (157), Mitch Marr (165) and Jacob Volkmann (174).
In addition, Gophers Nick Kirk (141) and Jeremy Larson (165) won titles in the redshirt/freshman division.
Minnesota wrestlers Jared Lawrence and Marcus LeVesseur (149) as well as Owen Elzen and Eli Ross (189) all reached the finals but did not wrestle each other.
Mortimer named National Swimmer of the Week
Collegeswimming.com named Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team member Justin Mortimer National Swimmer of the Week for his performance against North Carolina and North Dakota.
Mortimer won three individual events: the 400-yard IM, 500 freestyle and 1,000 freestyle. He was also the lead member in the Gophers’ 800 free relay team.
Hagen honored
Middle blocker Stephanie Hagen was named the co-Big Ten volleyball player of the week for her efforts last week against four opponents. She shared the honor with Ohio State’s Suzie Stiling.
Hagen averaged 4.47 kills per game, smacking 67 kills while committing nine errors. The award is Hagen’s third of her career, but the first for the Gophers this season.
Oonincx WCHA rookie of the week
Minnesota women’s hockey player Kristy Oonincx captured the WCHA rookie of the week honor for her weekend efforts against Bemidji State. Oonincx had four points against the Beavers. Fellow team members Kelly Stephens and Brenda Reinen have also been named WCHA rookie of the week this season.
Haug and Ticer eliminated
Junior Thomas Haug and freshman Avery Ticer were eliminated in the semifinals of the Big Ten Singles Championships in East Lansing, Mich., on Monday morning. Haug was the tournament’s No. 1 seed.
Both players won the first set in their matches, but dropped the next two. Haug lost to Jamal Parker, an unseeded player from Illinois, 7-6, 2-6, 2-6. Ticer was ousted by No. 6 seed Michael Calkins of Illinois, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.
