Gophers football announces home-and-home with TCU

There's been plenty of discussion about the quality, or lack thereof, of Minnesota's nonconference schedule.

On Tuesday, the Gophers announced they'll be beefing it up.

Minnesota will play a home-and-home series with Big 12 foe TCU. The Gophers will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to play the Horned Frogs on Sept. 13, 2014. They'll host TCU on Sept. 3, 2015.

The 2014 game will replace an empty week on Minnesota's schedule. The 2015 game will replace a previously scheduled tilt against FCS-opponent South Dakota State.

TCU isn't exactly a national powerhouse. But the Horned Frogs aren't pushovers either. TCU dominated Mountain West competition, which prompted a move over to the Big 12 in 2012.

While in the Mountain West, the Horned Frogs played in a pair of Bowl Championship Series games. They beat Wisconsin in the 2011 Rose Bowl. TCU finished with a 7-6 record in its first season in the Big 12.

Minnesota won't play any BCS opponents in their nonconference schedule in 2013. The Gophers had a home-and-home scheduled with ACC opponent North Carolina.

But they cancelled the series in October, triggering criticism from fans and local media.
