Hegerle named Field Athlete of the Week

by Derek Wetmore

Gophers thrower Micah Hegerle picked up right where he left off this indoor season, earning Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week in just the second week of competition.

It’s the Dodge Center, Minn. native’s second career award, and follows a career-best throw of 66 feet, 2 1/4 inches at the Minnesota Open on Saturday. The throw is the fifth best distance in Minnesota history.

The Gophers will host the Jack Johnson Classic this Friday-Saturday at the Fieldhouse with teams like Iowa, Northern Iowa, and South Florida coming in to compete (a far cry from the Concordia’s and Hamline’s that Minnesota has locked horns with thus far).

It’s an early season meet, so the coaches are wary of getting to up about it. Still, it will be the biggest test to date with the best competition, and likely the largest home meet for the Gophers this indoor season.
