Men’s track team takes five events at Snowshoe Open

The Gophers’ home event was a tuneup for next weekend’s Big Ten Indoor meet.

In a meet used as a tuneup for next weekend’s Big Ten Indoor Championships in West, Lafayette, Ind., Minnesota’s men’s track and field team won five event titles at the Snowshoe Open on Friday at the Field House.

Hans Storvick and Vince Donahoe took the top two places in the 600-meter dash. Storvick ran a 1:21.64, followed by Donahoe in 1:22.22.

Minnesota also placed first and second in the weight throw, with Adam Schnaible throwing a personal-best mark of 61-7 3/4. Curt Schoenfelder marked 60-4 1/2.

Matt Merkey won the pole vault, clearing 16-0 3/4.

Not all of the Gophers’ top performers competed, opting to rest and prepare for the Big Ten meet.

“We don’t have the depth that we’ve had in the past,” Minnesota coach Phil Lundin said. “Given that, we still have some very, very good individuals – people that are capable of Big Ten individual titles.”

Women win eight events

Minnesota’s women’s track and field team won eight events at the Parents’ Day Open on Saturday at the Field House.

The Gophers ran the top three times in the 600 meters, led by Melissa Steele, who won with a time of 1:32.10.

Kadian Douglas won the 60 meters in a time of 7.51, which is the second-fastest time in school history.

Minnesota’s women’s gymnastics team improved its season-high score by more than a point Saturday in a 196.000-195.625 loss to Denver.

Ashley Stanton won the balance beam with a score of 9.900, the best score of the season for Minnesota on the event.

Laura Johnson tied for second on the uneven bars, scoring 9.825.

Men’s gym loses at Iowa

After upsetting Michigan last Saturday, Minnesota’s men’s gymnastics team took a step backward in a 217.325-213.400 loss at Iowa on Saturday.

Guillermo Alvarez won the floor exercise and pommel horse with scores of 9.800 and 9.300, respectively.

Clinton Mays won the still rings with a score of 9.700.

Softball 3-2 in Houston

Minnesota’s softball team went 3-2 at the Crowne Plaza Classic in Houston, Texas, during the weekend.

The Gophers defeated North Carolina 3-2 and Texas State 1-0 Friday, lost to No. 12 Baylor 7-0 and beat Houston 4-1 Saturday, and lost to Kentucky 6-4 in 10 innings Sunday.

Minnesota plays Missouri, Iowa, Ball State and Louisville next week in the Red & Black Classic in Louisville, Ky., on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
