Two-year term
The principal legal task of the Legislature is to make laws that establish public policy. Legislative activity affects a wide range of state programs and resources including taxation, crime prevention and education.
Additional legislative functions include proposing amendments to the state constitution for approval by the electorate, electing members to the University Board of Regents and performing legislative oversight or review. All tax bills must originate in the House.
Minnesota has 134 representatives in the House.
