Minnesota sweeps Winthrop

With the Minnesota volleyball team resting starters, the Gophers had a chance to introduce some new faces to the Sports Pavilion. Freshmen Ariana Filho and Alex Blatt saw extensive time at their positions, and Minnesota overcame the on-court confusion that can be expected with new faces on the court, sweeping Winthrop 25-22, 25-11, 28-26. Blatt started the match at setter, and collected 22 assists and 13 digs before senior setter Rachel Hartmann replaced her midway through the third set. Filho played the entire match at middle blocker, finishing with four kills and three blocks. The Gophers were in danger of losing the third set, trailing 24-25, but sophomore middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer took control of the set. Gibbemeyer collected 10 of her match-high 19 kills in the third set, and ended the match on a solo block, her fifth block of the day. Minnesota played 12 of the 13 on the roster today, with senior captain Kelly Schmidt being the only of the Gophers not to see court time.
