Bruininks responds to Regent prof’s letter

Although he addressed concerns over transparency, he said the reconstruction will continue.

University of Minnesota President Bob Bruininks personally responded Tuesday to the Regents professorsâÄô letter requesting the postponement of the Graduate School reconstruction, but he will not be considering their request. In the letter obtained by the Daily, Bruininks does not specifically respond to the request, although he does acknowledge the professorsâÄô concern over the UniversityâÄôs lack of consultation before making the decision. Instead, he focused on the positives the administration believes the reconstruction will achieve, such as an increase in spending efficiency. âÄúThe provost, endorsed by all the Twin Cities collegiate deans and senior academic officers, felt this plan had the best chance of accomplishing a number of important goals of the University of Minnesota,âÄù he said in the letter. Bruininks also emphasized the implementation committee will soon be established. Despite the ignorance of their request, 24 Regents professors had signed the letter regarding the change as of Wednesday afternoon. In total, there are 27 current Regents professors, 16 of whom have now signed the letter. Eight retired Regents professors also have signed.
