Women’s gymnastics takes third at quadrangular meet

The University of Minnesota women’s gymnastics team placed third in a four team meet this weekend in Norman, Okla. The No. 25 Gophers posted a team score of 194.625. The team beat Centenary State (188.6) but fell behind No. 9 Nebraska (196.75) and No. 5 Oklahoma State (196.475).

Although the Gophers did not win any individual events, two gymnasts tallied new best scores. Sophomore Dusti Russell scored career highs on vault, uneven parallel bars, and in the all-around. She also had a season high score on the balance beam. Freshman Kylie Schermann achieved her own personal best on balance beam and also equaled the season best mark on floor exercise.

The meet exhibited the continued progress of some injured gymnasts. Junior Janell Campbell missed the first four meets this season with a foot injury but competed on both bars and floor in Okla. Junior Shannon Golich vaulted for the first time since Jan. 14 after she recovered from a quadriceps injury. She also performed on beam.

The women’s gymnastics team returns home this weekend for the Best of Minnesota meet against Hamline, Gustavus, and Winona State.
