Despite loss to Northwestern, two more recruits commit

Since their shocking loss to Northwestern on Saturday, two players have committed to the Gophers football team. Four-star junior college receiver Hayo Carpenter and three-star cornerback Kerry Lewis both committed over the weekend, according to GopherIllustrated.com. Rivals.com ranked Carpenter, out of College of the Canyons in California, as the 11th best junior college recruit in the country. He will have plenty of competition at the receiver position, after the Gophers brought in five receivers in their 2008 class âÄî Xzavian Brandon , Brandon Green , DaâÄôJon McKnight , Brandon Randolph and Brodrick Smith . The Gophers donâÄôt have any senior receivers, either. âÄúI really don’t know what type of impact I will make on the field,âÄù Carpenter told GopherIllustrated.com. âÄúI believe I can add some maturity to the young receivers we have on the team and help them reach their potential. I have been around the game a little longer and am used to the speed of the game.âÄù Lewis, out of Lancaster High School in Texas, is the first defensive back of the 2009 class. âÄúI went in to the weekend with no intention to commit to Minnesota during my visit,âÄù Lewis told GopherIllustrated.com. âÄúMy plan was always to take all five of my visits, but I loved everything about Minnesota so I knew that nothing could be better and I committed.âÄù Coach Tim BrewsterâÄôs second recruiting class is ranked No. 33 in the nation by Rivals.com .
