TOKYO (AP) — Ryan Longwell kicked a 27-yard field goal 10 minutes into sudden death overtime Sunday, giving Green Bay a 27-24 victory over Kansas City in a comeback from what looked like disastrous mistakes.
Green Bay fumbled on both of its first two possessions of the game. Kansas City cashed in on both for a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
In overtime, Green Bay’s Brett Conway missed a 25-yard field goal attempt. But the Packers got a second chance when the Chiefs’ Pete Stoyanovich missed from 42 yards.
In both Packer overtime drives, the key plays were passed from Green Bay’s fourth quarterback, David Klingler, to Bill Schroder, for 28 yards the first time and 38 the second. Schroder also scored a second-quarter touchdown on a 26-yard pass from No. 2 quarterback Doug Pederson.
Glyn Milburn returned a kickoff 76 yards to set up another Green Bay touchdown, and Brett Conway kicked a 27-yard field goal that gave Green Bay the tie with 8:41 left to play in the American Bowl exhibition game.
In Green Bay’s disastrous start, the Chiefs first got the ball on the Green Bay 18 after Packers starting quarterback Brett Favre’s fumble was recovered by Chester McGlockton. Elvis Grbac’s 10-yard pass to Tony Gonzalez covered much of the distance, and Grbac passed 2 yards to Tony Richardson for the score just 3:40 into the game.
On Green Bay’s next play, William Henderson fumbled after a pass from Favre, and the Chiefs’ Mark McMillian recovered at the Green Bay 41. Again, the Chiefs needed just six plays, including a 13-yard pass from Grbac to Gonzalez. Kimble Anders went the final seven yards at 7:42.
But the second quarter belonged to Green Bay.
Travis Jervey’s 48-yard run to the Kansas City 38 set up a 51-yard field goal by Longwell, Mike Prior’s interception of a pass by Billy Joe Tolliver led to a 38-yard field goal by Conway, and a recovery by Antonio London of Jesse Haynes’s fumble on a touchdown try at the Green Bay 3 led to a 97-yard scoring drive led by No. 2 quarterback Pederson.
Kansas City threatened at the end of the half, but Pete Stoyanovich missed a 40-yard field goal with 22 seconds left.
The Packers had a chance to win in regulation when Milburn ran 33 yards to the Kansas City 22. But a tripping penalty set them back, and Longwell missed a 45-yard field goal attempt with 56 seconds left.
