Eye on Sochi: Team USA falls to Canada, Finland beats Switzerland

The U.S. women’s hockey team dropped its first game of the Olympics on Wednesday morning with a 3-2 loss to Canada.

Team USA scored first late in the second period, and former Gophers defenseman Anne Schleper had an assist on the play.

Canada, however, scored early in the third period to tie it up 1-1. It took a 2-1 lead later in the period on a goal that seemed to have crossed the line after the whistle had been blown.

After Canada made it 3-1, Schleper scored a goal of her own late in the third period, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.

As the top two teams in the top preliminary bracket, the U.S. (2-1) and Canada (3-0) will advance to the semifinals. They will likely meet again in the gold-medal game.

Team Finland won its first game of the Olympics on Wednesday with a 4-3 overtime victory over Switzerland.

Former Gophers defenseman Mira Jalosuo recorded an assist in the win, and former Gophers goaltender Noora Räty made 24 saves.

Finland will play the loser of Saturday’s Russia-Sweden game.
