A then-Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd near Cup Foods in South Minneapolis. Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. Floyd repeatedly told Chauvin and the three other officers at the scene, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, that he could not breathe before becoming unresponsive.

MPD released the names of the four officers involved in George Floyd’s killing: Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J.Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao.
University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel announced that the University will no longer contract with MPD for law enforcement support during large events or for specialized services.
The cause and manner of George Floyd’s death remain under investigation by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.
Community organizers called for charges to be brought against Chauvin and the three other officers after all four were fired Tuesday.
