Though Sam Warning and Robin Höglund never heard their names called in a National Hockey League draft, they both still have the chance to make their pro dreams a reality. Warning and Höglund were invited to participate in the Minnesota WildâÄôs development camp from July 9-14, despite not being officially affiliated with the team. âÄúThey treat everyone the same,âÄù Höglund said. âÄúWe have a full schedule every day, and [there are] great trainers here, so thereâÄôs nothing to complain about at all.âÄù The camp focuses on developing the skills and conditioning of the organizationâÄôs top prospects, but thereâÄôs still room for more talent to try to make an impact. Of the 46 total players who made the roster for the WildâÄôs camp, 14 were invitees, including Warning and Höglund. For Warning, development camps will be the pathway to continuing his hockey career. Warning was a senior last season at Minnesota. He played in all 39 games and finished his final year with 12 goals and 12 assists, which placed him seventh on the team overall. After wrapping up his time with the Gophers, Warning signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Hershey Bears, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Washington Capitals, in April. Warning did not see any action with the Bears last season. âÄúFor me, itâÄôs making the most out of my opportunities,âÄù Warning said. âÄúDuring games and in practice I get to showcase myself, and then hopefully from there I can make an impression on somebody.âÄù Though Warning said he wonâÄôt attend any more development camps after the WildâÄôs, he was able to contribute during his short time with the teamâÄôs prospects. On July 11, Warning scored a goal during the campâÄôs open scrimmage to put his team on the board. The assist came from the familiar face of defenseman Mike Reilly, WarningâÄôs former Gophers teammate who recently signed a two-year contract with the team. âÄúWhen you first come here, you donâÄôt know many people,âÄù Warning said. âÄúSo seeing some familiar faces, especially Mikey and Robin, itâÄôs really nice.âÄù As Warning seeks to continue his hockey career, HöglundâÄôs has just begun at Minnesota. The sophomore from MöIndal, Sweden played in just five games with the Gophers during his rookie season. Though not a Wild draft pick, Höglund said everyone at camp was given the same expectations, so being an invitee was no different. âÄúI feel like IâÄôve improved a lot,âÄù Höglund said. âÄúIâÄôve gotten in better shape, gained a little muscle. IâÄôm very excited for the upcoming season.âÄù Warning and Höglund were roommates throughout the camp, spending time together on and off the ice. âÄúHe took me under his wing last year and showed me around,âÄù Höglund said. âÄúI didnâÄôt get to room with him before, so itâÄôs a great experience.âÄù As camp drew to a close, HöglundâÄôs focus was also on Mariucci Arena and his goals for the upcoming season. He attributed much of the teamâÄôs success last year to WarningâÄôs class of seniors, a group that won four straight conference titles during their time at Minnesota. He hopes to pick up where they left off. âÄúI feel like weâÄôre a very close group,âÄù Höglund said. âÄúWe might not have the highest expectations on us like we did coming in last season, and I think thatâÄôs good. We can take it one game at a time and get better.âÄù
