Zara Jo Case, 35, is facing one count of unintentional second-degree murder for stabbing her boyfriend in the chest in Southeast Como neighborhood, across from Van Cleave Park, Saturday morning.

Police arrived at the 900 block of 15th Ave. SE around 5:20 a.m. Saturday due to a neighbor complaint about a dispute, according to court documents. When they arrived, they found Case “extremely intoxicated” and “saying strange and incoherent things.”

Officers said the victim, Joseph McRunnel, 39, was also intoxicated, but cooperative and helpful. The victim was stabbed and later died of his wounds at Hennepin County Medical Center. Case told police she was recently out of rehab and had been addicted to methamphetamine and alcohol for 15 years.

Case is held on $750,000 bail until her court appearance Thursday.

McRunnel’s father set up a Facebook fundraiser following the death of his son.
