Wrestlers take top honors in North Dakota

Minnesota’s wrestling team opened its 1999-00 campaign with complete dominance at the Bison Open in Fargo, North Dakota.
The Gophers grapplers won titles in all 10 weight classes of the unattached, open competition.
Minnesota was led by returning All-Americans Leroy Vega at 125 pounds and Brock Lesnar at heavyweight, who each won their third-straight Bison Open title.
Senior Delaney Berger won his fourth-straight Open title at 174 pounds with a 9-3 decision over Jeremy Engelhardt of Mary University.
Highly-recruited freshman Damion Hahn won his first title at Minnesota with a 9-2 win over North Dakota State’s Steve Saxlund in the 184-pound weight class.

Men’s Swimming and Diving
The Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team rolled over Northwestern on Saturday at the Aquatic Center.
The Gophers — who placed first in all 17 individual events — won easily 198-95.
Junior All-American Alex Massura won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.12.
Another junior, Dan Croaston took first in 1-meter diving with a score of 285.3.

Women’s Swimming and Diving
The Gophers women’s swimming and diving team defeated Northwestern as well on Saturday, 182-118.
Diver Tracy Lavoi won both the 1-meter and the 3-meter events to lead the Gophers.
Minnesota’s Dana Baum captured the 1000 free with a time of 10:14.43, while Jinny Smedstad won the 200 free in a time of 1:51.59.
