Track teams set for NCAAs
Jumping and throwing are simple things that kids learn at an early age. They are also things that can get a person to this weekend’s NCAA indoor track and field championships in Indianapolis.
The Big Ten champion Gophers men’s track and field team is sending three of its members to the meet. Big Ten champion high jumper Staffan Strand leads the trio, while pole vaulters Tye Harvey and Vesa Rantanen round out the abbreviated squad.
Freshman Aubrey Schmitt is the only member of the women’s team to make it to the NCAAs. She qualified in the shot put based on her personal best throw in last weekend’s Iowa State Last Chance meet.
Her throw of 52 feet, 5 inches is the second best throw in Gophers history, and the 13th best throw in the nation this year.
