Minnesota shot a tournament-best 8-under 280 in the final round to finish sixth at the Puerto Rico Classic at the Westin Rio Mar Golf Club in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.

The Gophers sat 11th after the first two rounds, but all five Gophers golfers scored 75 or better on the final day.

Sophomore Bronson La’Cassie finished tied for 12th with a final-round 67 to end the tournament 3-under. La’Cassie began the tournament with a 6-over 78 Sunday before recovering Monday (68) and Tuesday.

Junior Ryan Paulson was right behind La’Cassie, shooting a final-round 71 to tie for 15th at 2-under for the tournament.

Sophomore Niall Turner shot an even-par 72 to finish tied for 49th at 8-over, and junior Josh Persons and senior Ben Greve shot 75 and 70, respectively, to both finish tied for 53rd at 9-over.

The Gophers travel to Atlanta in three weeks for their next tournament.

Alvarez gymnast of week

For the third time in four weeks, Minnesota men’s gymnastics senior Guillermo Alvarez was named Big Ten gymnast of the week Tuesday.

Alvarez posted a career-best 55.550 in the all-around Saturday at the Sports Pavilion in the Gophers’ 220.175-216.625 loss to Oklahoma.

Minnesota closes its regular season Saturday, traveling to Lincoln, Neb., to take on Nebraska at 2 p.m.

Few regional tickets left

As of Tuesday afternoon, only 200 tickets remained for the 2005 NCAA Men’s Hockey West Regional on March 25-26 at Mariucci Arena.
