Roger Goodell’s contract extended through 2018 season

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract has been extended through the end of the 2018 season, according to ESPN. Goodell, 52, first took over as commissioner in 2006 following Paul Tagliabue’s retirement.

After his extension was approved, Goodell said, “It is the only place I have ever wanted to work. … I am eagerly looking ahead to the challenge of building on our momentum and doing all we can to improve our game for the fans and everyone that is part of our league.”

Goodell’s original contract, which was a five-year deal, was extended in 2009. His new contract runs through March 2019. Financial terms and details of his new contract have not been disclosed publicly. Under his first contract, he earned nearly $10 million.

During his reign as commissioner, Goodell has prioritized both player safety and discipline. Under his watch, the NFL has become more harsh with fines and suspensions.

Most recently, Goodell oversaw the negotiations of long-term television contract extensions with ESPN, CBS, Fox, and NBC.
