Gangelhoff arraignment set for Monday in financial aid fraud case

Former University tutor Jan Gangelhoff is scheduled to be arraigned on one count of felony financial aid fraud next Monday before U.S. District Court Judge Paul Magnuson in St. Paul.
Gangelhoff is expected to enter a guilty plea at that time.
As part of the reported plea bargain, Gangelhoff will offer testimony against former men’s basketball coach Clem Haskins and former academic counselor Alonzo Newby in exchange for leniency in sentencing.
Haskins and Newby are two possible targets of a federal grand jury investigation into wire and mail fraud.
Gangelhoff is charged with one count of misappropriating federal Pell Grant funds by preparing fraudulent course work for a basketball player in 1995.
That player, unnamed in the charge filed last Friday, is thought to be Sacramento Kings guard Bobby Jackson, a standout on the Gophers 1997 Final Four team.
Gangelhoff admitted to writing 400 papers for players, including Jackson, between 1993 and 1998. The revelation sparked University, NCAA and federal investigations.
