Taliban jet fighters bomb northern Afghanistan killing 30

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Taliban jet fighters bombed a crowded market Sunday in northern Afghanistan, killing at least 30 people and wounding nearly 50 others, a spokesman for opposition soldiers said.
Jets screamed in low over Taloqan, about 150 miles north of Kabul, the capital, in at least four bombing sorties. The deadliest bomb landed in the middle of a food market where dozens were shopping, said Mohammed Arif, a spokesman for ousted President Burhanuddin Rabbani.
Taloqan is the capital of Takhar province, Rabbani’s stronghold.
Kabul residents said jet fighters roared out of combined military and civilian airports throughout Sunday heading toward northern Afghanistan.
Arif said the opposition has contacted the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Countries to protest Sunday’s bombing.
The United Nations and the OIC jointly have been trying to get the warring factions to reach a negotiated settlement.
