Kevin Steinhaus earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after pulling off his second upset of the young season. Steinhaus has taken Minnesota’s 184-pound roster spot and run with it.
He recently jumped to No. 15 at the weight in the country after upsetting then-No.8 Chris Perry. He now ranks 9th after defeating then-No. 8 Josh Ihnen of Nebraska 3-2.
Steinhaus backed up Thursday’s performance with two majors Saturday over Cal State-Bakersfield and Cal State-Fullerton.
Steinhaus is now 14-2 on the season and 6-1 in duals. 184 was a question mark enterring the season, but since Kaleb Young’s injury, Steinhaus’ performance has made it rather easy to forget there was ever any doubt as to who the starter would be.
The team will take a break for finals before competing in the Southern Scuffle just before New Years.
Interestingly, the announcement came just one day short of the one-year anniversary of Minnesota’s last Wrestler of the Week: Ben Berhow, Dec. 15, 2009.
