New soccer assistant coach hired from Boston

Assistant coach Kyle Singer both coached and played in the Boston area.

Minnesota’s soccer team announced the hiring Thursday of Kyle Singer as assistant coach.

Singer ” who will work with the goalkeepers ” spent three seasons as a goalie with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer after he finished his college career at Boston College in 2002.

The Plymouth, Minn., native was an assistant coach for Boston College’s men’s and women’s teams last season. Prior to that, he spent two years as an assistant for Northeastern’s men’s and women’s programs.

Singer steps in to the position Brandon Barkus held the past two seasons. Barkus left to take the head coach position at Augustana.

Tennis teams at home

Minnesota’s men’s tennis team plays host to a pair of teams from the Lone Star State this weekend at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The Gophers play at home against Texas A&M at 6 tonight and host Texas at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The women’s team is also home at the Baseline this weekend, hosting the Minnesota Court Classic. The tournament also features North Carolina and Oklahoma. The Gophers play against the Tar Heels at 2 p.m. today and host the Sooners at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Track and field in action

Minnesota’s men’s track and field team will compete at the Wisconsin Elite Invitational at 1:45 p.m. today. The meet is being held in Madison, Wis.

The women’s team is competing today at the Northern Iowa Invitational in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
