Twilights offer last prep for Big Ten

The men competed at Concordia University and the women at St. Thomas before the Big Ten outdoor championships.

The Minnesota track and field teams competed Wednesday at their last meets before the conference championships.

The women traveled to St. Paul to compete Wednesday at the Tommie Twilight at St. Thomas.

The Gophers captured six individual titles, but no team scores were kept.

On the track, Linnea Johnson won the 400-meter run with a time of 57.73 seconds. Sharyn Dahl claimed first place in the 400 hurdles at 1:00.45.

In the field, Melissa Flucke achieved the greatest height of 1.67 meters in the high jump. Todea-Kay Willis leapt the farthest in the long jump to maintain her perfect record in the event. Her distance was 6.13 meters, and she’s won every long jump she’s entered.

Redshirt freshmen Tina DeLakis and Devin Stanford continued their outdoor season throwing success. DeLakis won the shot put at 15.4 meters, and Stanford won the discus throw with 44.86 meters.

Andrea Rediger took second in the 1,500 and clocked in at 4:31.18.

Several other athletes finished on the podium. Megan Smith placed third in the 800. Kelli Budd was third in the 5,000. Jenna Lewein rounded out the third-place track finishes; she did so in the 3,000 steeplechase.

Katie Murgic and teammate Becca Pilkerton placed second and third, respectively, in the pole vault. Jeri Johnson-Chambers and Amy Kubat took second and third, respectively, in the hammer throw.

The women will not compete again until the Big Ten outdoor championships May 11-13 in Madison, Wis.

The men’s team also made the short trip to St. Paul and competed at the Gold Bear Twilight at Concordia University.
