New, old go out winners as No. 7 Duke tops Maryland

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Jeff Capel bid farewell to Cameron Indoor Stadium with 18 points, and Mike Chappell gave No. 7 Duke a glimpse of the future with 10 points in an 81-69 victory over No. 16 Maryland on Thursday night.
Getting over a mistake-riddled first half, the Blue Devils (23-6, 12-3 in the ACC) clinched at least a tie for the top seed in next week’s Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Capel highlighted senior night with a 3-pointer at the 9:51 mark that helped Duke pull away in the second half. Chappell, a freshman averaging four points a game, got all 10 of his points in the second half, five in a row following Capel’s 3-pointer.
Before Capel and Chappell took over, the Terrapins (20-8, 9-6) kept it tight. Maryland trailed 34-33 at halftime.
Keith Booth, who had 22 points, scored five in a row to bring Maryland to 71-63 with 4:55 to go. But he pulled on Trajan Langdon’s jersey after he missed a free throw and fouled out, and the Terrapins’ offense essentially went to the bench with him.
Langdon finished with 12 points. Steve Wojciechowski had 11 and Roshown McLeod had 10 for Duke.
Both teams were at their sloppiest for the first 14 minutes that may have been the result of the sauna-like conditions or the pressure of trying to stay put in the ACC standings.
Maryland committed 18 turnovers and shot 41 percent in the first half. The Terrapins got just one basket in an eight-minute stretch of the period, in which time Duke went on an 18-8 run and took a 30-24 lead.
