Your digest:

Gunman kills 12
A suspected lone gunman killed at least 12 people, wounded at least five and then killed himself at a support center for immigrants and refugees Friday morning in Binghamton, New York, CNN reports.  The gunman carried identification that stated he is 42 and from upstate New York, but officials have not yet released his name.  After the shooting, police and SWAT surrounded the building and evacuated civilians from nearby buildings. Why the shooting occurred is still unknown, CNN reports.

Gay marriage OK’d in Iowa
While a gay marriage bill is still being kicked around in the Minnesota Legislature, Iowa became the first state in the Midwest to OK gay marriage, the New York Times reports. The Iowa State Supreme Court approved gay marriage today and wedding bells could start ringing within the next month. “We have a constitutional duty to ensure equal protection of the law,” the Iowa justices wrote in their opinion. “If gay and lesbian people must submit to different treatment without an exceedingly persuasive justification, they are deprived of the benefits of the principle of equal protection upon which the rule of law is founded,” the NYT reports.  Any state legislation that could overturn the court ruling would take at least two years to process.

Israeli foreign minister interrogated
The new foreign minister of Israel, Avigdor Lieberman, is on the hot seat, reports the New York Times. Lieberman was questioned by a “national fraud squad” on suspicions of bribery, money laundering and breach of trust. On Wednesday, his first day as foreign minister, Lieberman caused controversy, stating that it was not Israel’s responsibility to keep up American-backed peace efforts with Palestinians, the NYT reports.
