Elmo sat alone by the window. He saw a yellow bird perched outside. “Little bird,” Elmo asked, “did your lady friend leave the nest again? That is very sad — makes me feel so bad.”
Bad like the bleak gray sky and brisk winds that would make Wednesday’s highs in the lower 20’s feel like cold beer on a lonely morning.
“But you can fly away, into the sky a way. You’re more lucky than me,” Elmo said. At that the bird flew off into today’s partly sunny sky and winds with highs in the upper 30’s, leaving Elmo all alone. He thought about Elma, who had walked out on him that morning, and wished he could just fly away too.
