Four Minnesota women’s hockey players were selected to play for the 2003 U.S. Select Team, USA Hockey announced Wednesday.
Natalie Darwitz, Kelly Stephens, Krissy Wendell and Lyndsay Wall will compete with the U.S. Select Team in the Four Nations Cup from Nov. 5-9 in Skövde, Sweden. All four players were on last year’s U.S. roster at the Four Nations Cup. The Gophers have that weekend off from competition.
The Four Nations Cup, previously known as the Three Nations Cup, is a round-robin tournament that has been held seven times, from 1996 to 2002. Canada, Finland and the United States competed until 2000, when Sweden also joined the field. The United States has competed every year except 2001 and earned the title in 1997. Canada defeated Team USA 4-2 in last year’s championship game.
Darwitz completed her freshman campaign with a team-high 68 points. A top-10 Patty Kazmaier finalist, She scored four hat tricks, 10 power-play goals and five game-winning goals. Darwitz, a member of the 2002 U.S. Olympic Team, skated her way to first-team All-America honors last season.
