Former Gophers quarterback/receiver MarQueis Gray signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent Saturday moments after the end of the 2013 NFL Draft.
Gray’s agent, Mitch Chargo of AMI Sports, said Gray will move to tight end.
“I think that was expected,” Chargo said. “He’s been training specifically for that for the last six or seven weeks.”
Gray will report to the 49ers’ rookie minicamp May 9, Chargo said. He’ll likely be invited to the 49ers’ training camp this summer, but he’s not guaranteed a roster spot.
Gray, a highly touted recruit out of Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis, entered last season as the Gophers’ starting quarterback but struggled with injuries. Freshman Philip Nelson replaced Gray as the starter in mid-October.
Former Gophers cornerback and return man Troy Stoudermire signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday as well.
This marks the third straight year that no former Gophers players were drafted.
