The cool, sincere voice of a female narrator plays over shots of disillusioned-looking school children. The problem: former President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act; it’s a waste of money and it’s a thorn in the side of the Minnesota school system, says DFL gubernatorial candidate Matt Entenza. But, wait. He’s got the solution–scrap it.

"It’s part of a failed Bush legacy," he said in a previous interview.

Entenza released a new TV advertisement returning the attacks of one of his DFL opponents, Margaret Anderson Kelliher, on NCLB. Kelliher, the DFL’s endorsed candidate, says Minnesota needs the federal funding that comes along with it.

"We must reform No Child Left Behind,” Kelliher said in a past press release. “But cutting $440 million from K-12 classrooms – causing higher class sizes, more four-day school weeks, and additional teacher layoffs – is the wrong thing to do. What Matt Entenza has proposed is shortsighted and fiscally irresponsible.”

Entenza’s education plan calls for increased accountabilty and substantive reforms to the state’s school system.

“Matt Entenza is the only candidate for governor who will scrap No Child Left Behind and let teacher’s teach to every child’s potential, instead of a test,” the ad’s narrator says.

The screen sparkles with shots of smiling children. In one instance, a little girl rips what is presumably a standardized test in half, hot dog style.

Kelliher’s campaign Manager Jaime Tincher issued a statement expressing her displeasure with the ad and its timing.

“We are disappointed that in this late hour before the DFL primary, Matt Entenza is running misleading, negative TV ads."
