Governors bet on weekend football

Gophers football players may be playing for more than just a Big Ten victory and an axe on Saturday. According to a Fox11 story, the teams will also be playing for their governor’s palates.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has put his faith behind the Gophers in the form of Hormel pork tenderloin and Minnesota-grown wild rice. If the Gophers win, Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle will have to send Pawlenty Usinger’s sausage and Carr Valley Cheeses.

Saturday’s game will be the 119th meeting between the Gophers and Badgers, with Wisconsin claiming victories and Paul Bunyan’s Axe the last five meetings.

The governors didn’t stop the betting with the college game. Both heads of state have put a selection of state beers on the line when the Minnesota Vikings host the Green Bay Packers on Monday night.
