Gophers junior middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer was named on Monday Big Ten co-player of the week. Gibbemeyer shares the honor with Penn State’s Blair Brown.
The honor comes following a memorable weekend for Gibbemeyer. First, she became just the sixth player in Minnesota volleyball history with more than 1,000 kills and 400 blocks after her first kill against Iowa on Friday. Gibbemeyer followed that on Sunday by setting a new career high for blocks in a match with 12 in just three sets against Wisconsin. The 12 blocks are also tied for the fourth-most in a match in school history.
“[Gibbemeyer] has to be one of the best, if not the best middle blocker to ever play at Minnesota.” Gophers head coach Hebert said. “She’s developed the ability to play at the same level every time out, very consistently playing at a high level.”
Gibbemeyer joins freshman Tabatha Love as Gophers who have earned Big Ten player of the week honors.
