Oldfield earns Associated Press Coach of the Year honors

Already recognized as the Big Ten Coach of the Year, Minnesota women’s basketball coach Brenda Oldfield earned the Associated Press Coach of the Year award Thursday.

Oldfield is the first Gopher coach to win the award, which was given out at the Women’s Final Four in San Antonio.

Minnesota finished the season with a record of 22-8 after winning only eight games last season. In addition, the 11 Big Ten wins were three more than the Gophers recorded in the past six years combined.

Minnesota finished the season ranked 18th in the country. The Gophers defeated the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before bowing out to North Carolina.

Guard Lindsay Whalen, the Big Ten’s Player of the Year, was also recognized Thursday as an
honorable mention All-America by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

The sophomore averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game this season.

Freshman center Janel McCarville joined her coach and point guard by winning postseason honors of her own. McCarville earned conference Rookie of the Year accolades.
