New Boynton study connects flu shot with better overall health

On Monday, Boynton Health Service released a study linking influenza vaccinations with better overall health. Ed Ehlinger , Boynton director and study coordinator, said getting a flu shot was a personâÄôs best bet to stay on top of everything. âÄúThey missed fewer classes, they missed fewer days of work, they needed fewer antibiotics over the course of the year, and had fewer physician visits,âÄù he said. âÄúAnd they also did better in classes.âÄù However, flu shots are not a guarantee to prevent a person from getting the flu, said Joan Rambeck , a pediatric nurse practitioner in the Office of Emergency Response . For example, if a person comes into contact with someone else who has the flu, they can still get it. Rambeck also warned that the vaccination takes some time before it starts working. âÄúIt takes about two weeks for antibodies to build up once youâÄôve had the vaccination,âÄù she said. âÄúGetting the vaccination the day they get the flu wonâÄôt protect you.âÄù According to statistics maintained by the Minnesota Department of Health, reported cases of influenza this season are down from this time last year. -Cody Zwiefelhofer
