Faculty Senate passes policy revision

The University of Minnesota’s Faculty Senate unanimously approved a policy revision meant to strengthen faculty’s academic freedom Thursday.

The University Senate’s Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee pursued the revision because court decisions suggest academic freedom in public universities may be in jeopardy, Chair Tom Clayton said.

University President Bob Bruininks and Senior Vice President and Provost Tom Sullivan, who said he is in support of the revision, must approve the change before it is brought to the Board of Regents in May.

The board will have final say on if the revision is made.
