Shorthanded Gophers defeat Indiana

The Gophers were without center Reggie Lynch and guard Amir Coffey in the conference win

With Gophers’ starting guard Amir Coffey out with a shoulder injury and starting center Reggie Lynch was out with a University suspension,  and the Gophers had to start two former bench players in Michael Hurt and Bakary Konaté to keep going where the starters left off.

The duo were quiet with two points between the two of them, and the game was lost to a 8-7 Indiana team who was without their starting center.

Minnesota (13-4 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) lost to conference opponent Indiana (9-7 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) by a score of 75-71 on Saturday, Jan. 6 at Williams Arena.

The Gophers hopes were lost when the Hoosiers’ Robert Johnson sunk one of two free throws with eight seconds to play to put the Gophers out of range with a score of 75-71. Gophers guard Nate Mason ran down the court to hit a three bucket in hopes of somehow tying it, but he missed and the Gophers lost the shorthanded game.

Gophers Dupree McBrayer, Jordan Murphy and Mason, the three original starters who played in Saturday’s game, combined for 58 points as the Gophers shot 52 percent in the second half to keep the game close

Konaté and Hurt took two shots between the two of them, as they passed it to the three original starters to put points on the board.

Jordan Murphy looked to get double-double number 17 of the season to tie the NCAA record that Tim Duncan set in the 1996-97 season. With under a minute two play, Murphy needed two rebounds to tie the record.

He got 10th rebound as Johnson’s second free throw missed at eight seconds to play and came down to him to put his name next to Duncan’s in the record books.

Head coach Richard Pitino’s team looked much different than it did a week ago on Saturday night, as two of his star players were out, one with a suspension and one with a shoulder injury. It is unknown how long the two will be out as Lynch appeals his suspension and Coffey recovers from his shoulder injury
