The Minnesota men’s basketball team is ranked No. 18 in the country in the preseason ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll, and is ranked No. 25 in the preseason AP poll.
Minnesota is the last of five Big Ten teams ranked in the top 25 of the coaches poll. Michigan State (No. 2), Purdue (No. 7), Michigan (No. 15) and Ohio State (No. 17) are the others. The Big Ten has the most teams ranked in the top 20 out of any conference.
In the AP poll, Michigan State (No. 2), Purdue (No. 7), Michigan (No. 15), Ohio State (No. 16) and Illinois (No. 23) are ranked ahead of the Gophers. The six ranked Big Ten teams are the most from any conference.
The Gophers reached the NCAA Tournament last March, losing to Texas (ranked No. 3 in both preseason polls), 76-62, in the first round.
Minnesota will play an exhibition against Minnesota-Duluth on Thursday, Nov. 5, and opens the regular season against Tennessee Tech on Friday, Nov. 13. Both of those games are at Williams Arena.
