Men and women rack up big wins over North Carolina

Despite pregame thoughts that this past weekendâÄôs swimming and diving meets against North Carolina would be close, the Gophers swam away with large victories from both the menâÄôs and womenâÄôs teams. The men dominated the Tar Heels 220 -146, with strong performances in relays and diving backing up the win. âÄúThis victory is definitely one step closer to the goals we set at the beginning of the season,âÄù senior swimmer Josh Griffey said. The team is on the prowl for postseason accomplishments. A 1-0 start is a big confidence booster, Griffey said. With a large graduating class in 2008, the team will look to its freshmen to provide the depth it may be lacking. Freshman swimmer Kyle Burdis is proof that the team will be able to rely on a wealth of young talent. âÄúI canâÄôt even describe how [Burdis] performed at this meet as a freshman,âÄù senior Adam Weis said. Burdis contributed to a first-place 200-yard medley relay finish and took first place in the 100-yard backstroke. Women oust Tar Heels The womenâÄôs swimming and diving team also earned a win this weekend, toppling North Carolina 217-151 . The win moves the Gophers to 3 -0. Gophers co-head coach Kelly Kramer said being undefeated is nice, but taking home a victory against a quality team was a bigger boost. âÄúEvery time you have a meet where youâÄôre performing well and performing well consistently across the board, it affects your mindset,âÄù Kramer said. Minnesota drew on all aspects of its ability in the win, with victories in relays, freestyle, individual medley and butterfly, among others, allowing the team to take 15 of the meetâÄôs 20 events. Both teams will take on Iowa next weekend at home.
